Neonate Program

Our Neonate Program

OK Humane’s Neonate Program takes in kittens and puppies under the age of 6 weeks old. This is the most vulnerable population in our city shelters and communities. Our mission is to help ease the burden of care on our shelter partners and neighbors by placing these animals into specially trained foster homes where they can grow and develop in a stress-free environment.

Fostering Neonates in Your Home

Over the past four years, the neonate program has not only been able to take in over 4,000 neonatal kittens and puppies, but we have been able to provide safe housing for nursing mothers to raise their litters as well. None of this would have been possible without the help and support of our amazing network of foster homes.

We offer specialized training to our foster families that focuses on neonatal animals and their nursing mothers. We also provide medical care, fostering supplies, and food for our foster families in order to help support them as they care for the animals in our program.

The types of neonate animals we send to foster homes:

  • Mother cats & dogs with nursing babies of various ages
  • Bottle babies (0-4 weeks old)
  • Weanlings (4-6+ weeks old)

I found a baby kitten! What can I do?

It can be very tempting to take in a lonesome kitten or kittens that you’ve found outside. However, without a plan in place, that can actually be harmful to the kitten(s).

Mom is ultimately the best caregiver for them, so it is best to first try and wait to see if she returns to care for them. If mom has not returned after waiting for a few hours, next steps may be taken by humans to ensure they are cared for.

Please take a look at the guides below for further information about what to do when you’ve found a kitten and would like to help!

Supporting Tiny Lives

Having the right supplies helps us and our foster homes continue to provide top-notch care for the tiniest animals in our communities. We are very thankful for the continued support from our donors – it truly takes a village to raise these babies!
